Primary Work Location: City of Olathe Fleet Services facility in Olathe, Kansas. Occasional work at other City facilities or field locations may be required.

The City of Olathe is recruiting for a Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Fleet Technician to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair the trucks, heavy equipment, and specialized vehicles that support City operations.

Technicians may work on commercial trucks, loaders, backhoes, trailers, utility vehicles, and other fleet assets. Duties include preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs involving mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, air, and drivetrain systems.

Who should apply?

Experienced diesel and heavy-equipment technicians may qualify for Technician III or IV placement, with pay from $26.01-$39.84 per hour.

Candidates with relevant experience in fleet, diesel, automotive, commercial truck, agricultural equipment, heavy equipment, military mechanical maintenance, technical school, or manufacturer training are encouraged to apply.

Applicants do not need to have every preferred certification at the time of application. The City provides training and support for required post-hire credentials.

Technician levels and pay

This position may be filled at the Technician I, II, III, or IV level based on related experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability to perform the work independently.

Technician I: $22.19-$29.48 per hour
Typically requires 0-2 years of related experience.

Technician II: $24.23-$32.42 per hour
Typically requires 2-4 years of related experience.

Technician III: $26.01-$35.67 per hour
Typically requires 4-6 years of related experience in fleet, diesel, automotive, or heavy-equipment maintenance.

Technician IV: $28.56-$39.84 per hour
Typically requires 6+ years of progressively responsible related experience, including complex diagnostics and repair work.

A high school diploma or GED is required for all Technician levels. Related technical or trade school, manufacturer training, military mechanical experience, and industry certifications may be considered when determining technician-level placement.

Licenses and Certifications

Required at hire

• Valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record.
  

Required after hire

• Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.
  
• Refrigerant recovery/recycling certification within the required timeframe, depending on assignment.
  
• Other assignment-specific certifications, as required.
  

Preferred qualifications include

• ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications.
  
• EVT certifications, where applicable.
  
• Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic and electrical systems.
  

Hiring bonus

Eligible new hires may earn a $4,000 hiring bonus:

• $1,000 after 30 days of continuous employment.
  
• $1,000 after 6 months of continuous employment.
  
• $2,000 after one year of continuous employment and completion of all required certifications identified in the offer letter.
  

The hiring bonus is subject to budget availability, required approvals, and applicable City policy. Current City employees moving between City positions; temporary, seasonal, intern, or part-time employees unless expressly approved; former employees rehired within 24 months of separation; and individuals hired through staffing agencies or other third-party arrangements are not eligible.

The Fleet Maintenance Technician I performs skilled maintenance diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light and medium duty trucks, and various equipment such as but not limited to automobiles, trucks, tractors, and lawn mowers to ensure vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines causes, recommends and/or completes repairs, including but not limited to engine, transmission, brake suspension, hydraulic and electrical systems using proper safety devices and procedures.
  
• Performs preventative maintenance and inspections on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment to mitigate breakdowns and extend their lifespan.
  
• Responds to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including afterhours and snow emergencies.
  
• Uses Fleet Software and other IT programs to maintain detailed records of repairs, equipment usage and condition.
  

Qualifications

Experience:A minimum of two years of training and/or experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience preferred.

Education:A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with coursework in automotive service is required.A certificate or diploma through an automobile mechanic trade school is preferred. Equivalent and relevant experience may be substituted for education.

Licenses & Certifications:A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. Within six months of employment, a Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement and a DOT medical certification must be obtained.Air conditioning refrigerant, recovery and recycling certification required.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Work often requires exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold, odor and noises. Work is performed in the Vehicle Maintenance shop and in the field.
