Position Description THE POSITION Street Maintenance Superintendent is the highest supervisory class in the Street Maintenance Supervisor series and is responsible for directing the field activities of the Street Maintenance Division. Incumbents coordinate, assign and direct the work of personnel engaged in street maintenance including preparing job cost estimates, ensuring compliance and maintaining records of projects.
- Plans, schedules and maintain records for street projects and monitors street projects.
- Supervises and coordinates the work of the division in construction, maintenance, street repair, sidewalks, alleys, curbs, gutters, storm drains, electrical work, and urban forest.
- Inspects and ensures compliance with various contracts in the division.
- Assigns, supervises, monitors, inspects, and evaluates the work of subordinate employees in the maintenance of publicly owned rights of way, streets, and alleys.
- Maintains records of projects, records time, location, and type of work performed by subordinates.
- Assists in the development and implementation of divisional safety and training programs.
- Prepares job cost estimates.
- Receives, investigates, and processes complaints from the public.
- Directs the division in the absence of the Public Works Manager. Performs related duties as required.
One vacancy exists in the Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.
Two (2) years of supervisory experience in street maintenance operations or field construction operations.

Twelve (12) units of accredited college or university coursework in engineering, construction, public or business administration. An additional year of qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
A copy of degree or college transcripts must be uploaded and included in your on-line application for verification of requirement. Applicants lacking the documentation may be rejected.
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Driver's License required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno
THE EXAMINATION PROCESS The examination process may consist of the following:
APPLICATION REVIEW - Qualifying Only: Applications which meet the minimum qualifications will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to the oral examination. Selection of the most qualified candidates will be based upon those applications demonstrating the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for evaluation.
ORAL EXAM - 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related oral examination to evaluate a candidate's knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, methods and practices used in the construction, maintenance and repairs of streets and related infrastructure and safety procedures; ability to plan, layout, coordinate, inspect and schedule the work of street maintenance employees, read and interpret engineering plans and specifications and maintain effective working relationships or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Street Maintenance Superintendent. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The oral examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of October 26, 2026.

LONG TERM DISABILITY Benefit equal to 66.66% of monthly salary up to $7,500 per month after 30 days of disability; premium paid by the City.

BILINGUAL PREMIUM $100 per month upon approved certification
HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA) Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
